‘Bird condo’ reopens at Grand Harbor January 2, 2015 One of my favorite columns at the Press Journal had to do with a widow’s request that I help her find a home for a six-story birdhouse built by her husband before he died. Hard to believe it’s been almost three years since I wrote about Margarette Koplin’s unusual request via email. Her husband of 58 years, Roger, built what he called a “bird condo” for martins, but he died before it opened for business, so to speak. Twenty-six individuals or organizations expressed interest in birdhouse. Margarette eventually picked Grand Harbor. It was a great choice, as the Grand Harbor Audubon Society is top notch. Deb Fletcher, president of the group, assured Margarette — known to friends as “Mitzi” — the birdhouse was in good hands. On Wednesday, the “bird condo” was put in place for another season.
